A walk through Marshall park

Last February, before I moved to Charlotte, I took a trip here to check out the area. I was so curious to know what my future home looked like. A group of friends I was with really wanted to go to the mall, but I wanted to go somewhere that was a little less crowded. Driving through Uptown Charlotte I came across Marshall Park. After I spent a couple of hours in the park, I left with the intent on coming back to this beautiful park at some point when I move to Charlotte. Exactly a year later and I reunited with my favorite place to relax.

Marshall Park is located in East Uptown Charlotte, across from the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Surrounded by a bunch of buildings, this park is a great place to take a quick break from your day and your troubles. There are benches in the center of the park, which makes it very convenient to sit and have lunch or sit and read a book. Also in the center of the park is a waterfall that adds an extra calming vibe to the place. If you are into exercising, you will really love the loop that surrounds the park, which is normally used for walking or jogging. One of my favorite things about this park is that it is animal friendly, meaning that you are more than welcome to bring your dog and enjoy the day with them. Also, animal friendly means that the park has a very special animal of their own… Geese! It is very common that when you go to Marshall Park you will see geese everywhere. Although extremely friendly, it is a mandatory park rule that you are not allowed to feed the geese.

Some of the other rules of the park are no cruising, no hunting, no littering and no swimming in the lake. Also, the park opens at sunrise and it closes at dusk everyday. If you are looking for somewhere to park when coming to this park, the only options you have are to find one of the parking spots along the road and pay for the meter to run for two hours or park in one of the uptown parking decks. I would recommend this park to people of all ages, but if you are below the age of sixteen you can not ride a bike or skateboard through here without a helmet. This is my favorite place to hang out and relax because this was the first place I saw in Charlotte. Also, this park is my favorite because I love how calm it is and how there are always geese there. Your view of East Uptown is great from the park, as you can see the Bank of America Stadium from the side of the park. There is also a little play area if you decide to bring your children along. I love Marshall Park so much I encourage you all to go check it out.

Tasting the love one drink at a time!

Love is in the air… and in your drink! If you are familiar with the secret menu from Starbucks, you know there are many different drinks that you can try that are perfect for this Valentine’s Day. I decided to try the ¨Love on the Rocks¨ refresher from the Starbucks secret menu, and I found it to be extremely delicious.

This refresher was made with the juice used in the famous Berry Hibiscus Refresher. If you are familiar with the Berry Hibiscus Refresher, you know that the refresher is half juice, half water with berries and ice in it, shaken. The Love on the Rocks refresher is the same berry juice but instead of water they put apple juice in it. If you are into juice, then this is the perfect drink for you because there are not two but three different kinds of juices in this drink. After the berry juice and apple juice, they put raspberry flavoring in the drink. I got a venti size so they put 6 pumps of raspberry in the drink (for all of my non-Starbucks drinking people a tall is small, grande is medium and venti is large). Lastly, the drink was topped with a splash of passion iced tea and ice, shaken and poured into the cup.

Overall, the drink was very good. I was extremely pleased with the options on the secret menu. I am not a

fan of coffee at all, so I was not sure if I was going to be able to find a drink that was just right for me being that majority of the drinks at Starbucks have coffee in them. The drink was a lot sweeter than I imagined it to be, but it was still very tasty. I think if I would have gotten a little less raspberry than it would have been a little better because the raspberry was a little strong. I would definitely recommend this drink to anyone, especially if you are not a fan of coffee because there is absolutely no coffee in it. If you are not a juice lover you are not, I repeat you are not going to like this drink. It is very fruity and I might suggest you do half the amount of raspberry pumps than what normally come with the drink, especially if you get a venti size.

If you go online and go to http://starbuckssecretmenu.net/ you can find a bunch of other drinks if you aren’t big into juice. On the website they have refreshers, frappuccinos and different kinds of lattes for you to try. Many of these drinks are Valentine’s Day themed. My favorite part about the refresher was the apple juice. I could taste the apple juice more than anything else in the drink. If you have a valentine, bring them with you to Starbucks and try the refresher, you won’t regret it! Or come by yourself and enjoy the cool refresher, it is the perfect way to spend your Valentine’s Day.

¨I like to start my day off with exercise. I wake up and go to the gym before class and it gives me the energy to start my day. Even when I’m not feeling good I still push myself to go to the gym because I know in the end it will all be worth it and I´m working towards a better me and a better life.¨

Professionalism: The Guide to Being Successful

Imagine being in an elevator with the CEO of the company of your dreams and saying the wrong thing, or having an important interview and not knowing what to say. Sounds scary right? As crazy as it sounds, this happens quite often. A lot of people do not stress the importance of professionalism until it is too late. We have so many different resources that are accessible for enhancing your professionalism skills, including clubs and organizations right here on campus. Knowing how to be professional is essential when searching for a career or even just for networking amongst your peers.

Here at UNC Charlotte, we offer the opportunity to work on your professionalism through clubs and organizations, such as the American Marketing Association (AMA). AMA is a marketing organization that is all about marketing yourself. In other words, they assist you in the process of building your professional skills and make it so that by the time you need to have an interview for any reason, you are heavily prepared. They have events that allow you to network with former UNCC students who are now very successful in their careers, as well as meetings every other week with topics ranging from the difference between different business styles and how to prepare yourself for an interview.

Another resource on campus is the University Career Center. The purpose of the career center is to help you with your resume, and provide insightful detail on how you can improve your professionalism. On their website you can see when the next career fair will be, and other events that benefit you such as mock interviews, resume workshops and how to set up your Hire A Niner page. You can make an appointment to the career center or you can also just drop by, as they have walk in appointments as well. If you take advantage of the events on the website and try to attend as many workshops as you can, you will be destined for success!

One of the hardest things to do when it comes to an interview is knowing what to wear. There are several different styles, such as business casual and business professional. Business professional will almost always include a suit. For men, a suit and tie is the safest thing to wear to a business professional event. For these events I would definitely recommend playing it safe, do not try to add any extra flavor to your outfit. Keep the colors neutral, nothing too bright (the safest way to go is to wear black). For women, this would include either a pantsuit or a dress or skirt with a jacket.

On the other hand, business casual is a different story. Many people assume that business casual means that you can be casual, but that is not the case. A good word to use when you are searching for a business casual outfit is formal. Business casual, in other words is a formal outfit of your choice. The color scheme for business casual is way more broad than the color scheme for business professional. For men, a simple pair of dress pants and a collared or buttoned shirt will do. For women, a simple pants and blouse will do, or a nice dress.

As you can see, we have quite a few resources on campus that will help you develop the skills you need to succeed in life. When it comes to knowing what to wear to professional events, stick with neutral colors, nothing too flashy and bright. When it comes to interviews, do not just wing it. Practice answering questions and have responses ready for different subjects. Stick to these guidelines and everything should fall into place for you.

Have you ever had a craving for something sweet? If you are a human than your answer should be yes. Coffee Cone Cafe is the perfect spot to settle your sweet tooth. Located right outside of campus on University City Boulevard (by Arby´s and 7 Eleven), Coffee Cone Cafe is extremely convenient for our students living on campus and around the campus area. Not only is the location convenient, but they also give a comfortable environment, they have a variety of flavors and options on the menu and their prices are affordable as well. When you come eat at Coffee Cone Cafe you will be greeted by the friendly owners who serve you with a smile.

The Location is convenient

Coffee Cone Cafe has been in Charlotte for a little less than a year and a half, and the co owners, Mr. and Mrs. Flowers are so happy to be serving us coffee and ice cream. One of the coolest things about this place is the location.. Right outside of campus! All you have to do is walk across the street and you’re there. They are open Monday through Wednesday 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sundays.

It is a place to eat and do homework

Once you step inside the coffee shop, you are guaranteed to feel at home. The cozy shop is decorated with positive paintings on the walls and bright-colored furniture to compliment the colors in the store. You will often find students in there enjoying a cup of coffee or a pastry while typing a paper or completing a homework assignment. It truly is a place where everyone feels welcome and at home.

It is a place for everyone to order

One of the very unique things about this coffee shop is that their menu appeals to everyone’s dietary needs. They have a section on the menu for gluten-free drinks and food and a section for people who are lactose intolerant as well. Every drink in here is made from scratch so if there is something you want to add to your drink or something you do not want in your drink, they can alter the drink for you with no problem. When it comes to the ice cream, they also make the ice cream from scratch as well. They offer different kinds of milk so if you aren’t a fan of whole milk do not fear, they also offer almond milk, soy and plenty of other different substitutes.

It is affordable

Recently, I went to visit Coffee Cone Cafe and I bought a small cup of vanilla ice cream with peanut butter syrup on top and it was about $2. Being a college student, I understand that we are all on budgets, and Coffee Cone Cafe understands as well. They make it easy for you to come enjoy a cup of coffee or something to eat because their prices are extremely affordable. For more information on their prices and different items they offer you can check out their Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/coffeeconecafe/.

They make you feel at home

My favorite part about coming to this coffee shop is the amount of comfort I receive going in there. Being a transfer student was not easy last semester when I transferred here without friends and family. The very first time I went to Coffee Cone Cafe, the owner greeted me with a smile and conversed with me for a while after my order was taken. She smiled and waved good-bye as I left and encouraged me to return again soon. Her presence alone made me feel welcome and she is always excited to see me return. The owners of the shop love to meet new people and will definitely make you feel like that is your home away from home. I urge everyone to go check this coffee shop out, you will feel sweet inside and out!
