Charlotte Volleyball (15-5, 2-2) traveled to Florida Atlantic University (10-5, 1-2) to play in their fourth Conference USA match of the season on Oct. 1.
49ers Senior Janell Sparks had a personal best in kills with 25, but the team was unable to get the road victory against the Owls dropping the match 1-3. As a team, the 49ers dominated the blocks category again as they led the Owls 13-7.
The first set started off they way the 49ers wanted. After the set got tied up at 23, Sparks had two straight kills coming out of a timeout to put Charlotte up 1-0 in sets. After the first set, FAU was able to gain momentum and never looked back.
Charlotte held a 17-14 lead in the second set, but the Owls rallied back and were able to even the match with a 25-23 set win. The momentum from the second set comeback led to a dominant third set won by the Owls by a score of 25-15.
Trailing 1-2 in the match, Charlotte gave FAU a close fourth set that saw them down 24-20 before making the score even at 24-24. The Owls were able to fend off the 49ers comeback effort and end the set at 26-24 and claim the match victory.
Head coach Karen Weatherington views the loss as a learning experience for the team.
“The key takeaway from today is we recognized the grind of C-USA and know we must prepare for battle every day,” Weatherington said.
Charlotte’s next match will be played on Oct. 6 when the 49ers host C-USA opponent UTEP (4-12, 1-2) in the Halton Arena at 6 p.m. The 49ers will look to gain their third C-USA win of the season.
