Coming off another tournament winning weekend, Charlotte played their 13th home game in a row, against their in-state rival NC State on Wednesday, March 1. The game started at the D.L Phillips Softball Complex at 4:00 p.m. sharp, and each team brought in at least one run in the first inning.

Every run the 49ers scored this game was brought in by a homer, and two of the three home runs hit were from sophomore Lizzy Birch. Haley Pace was the one who got the Niners started in the bottom of the first when she hit her first home run of the season out to center field, and took teammate Kiersten Berrier back to the dugout with her.

Charlotte kept the lead until the top of the third when the Wolfpack hit a homer of their own and tied the game at 2-2. But the Niners would not have it,  as sophomore Meredith Harris stepped up to bat.

Harris singled the ball down the left foul line and advanced to second and third when teammates Spencer Gray and Erin Powers grounded the ball. Next up to the plate was infielder Lizzy Birch who homered the ball down the left foul line and gave Charlotte control of the game once again with the score of 4-2.

However, one home run was just not enough for Birch as she stepped up to bat once again in the bottom of the sixth. She hit the ball out to left center, and bumped Charlotte’s lead up to 5-2. The two homers Birch hit in this game were her first two of the 2017 season.

Pitcher Haley Wiseman had a solid day in the circle and was able to keep the Wolfpack from scoring more than two runs in the entire game. Her record for this season is now 9-2 as Charlotte heads down to Florida for their next five games in Citrus Classic.
