The Charlotte 49ers women’s basketball team was in Indiana Monday night taking on Ball State. Lefty Webster had 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists, but it was not enough as Charlotte (2-7) fell 76-66 to the Cardinals (4-4).

The 49ers played well in the first half, but Ball State overpowered Charlotte in the second half behind Nathalie Fontaine who scored 14 of her 18 points in the final period. Ball State had four players in double figures while Webster was the only one in that category for Charlotte. The 49ers shot 59 percent in the first half, but only managed to connect on 24 percent in the second.

Charlotte opened the game with three straight three-pointers from Kira Gordon, Ciara Gregory and Ayanna Holmes. Gregory made her first career start and totaled eight points for the 49ers. Charlotte led by as much as 13 in the first half on a couple occasions, but went to the locker room with only a 42-40 lead.

Ball State built momentum before the half and carried it over into the second. Charlotte would keep it close until down the stretch when the Cardinals eventually pulled away. Ball State would go on a 10-2 run with under five minutes and then it became a contest of free throws as the Cardinals held on for the 76-66 victory.

Charlotte comes back home for back-to-back games against Presbyterian and Davidson on Thursday, Dec. 18 and Sunday, Dec. 21 before taking a holiday break. Charlotte will look to gain some confidence before heading into conference play Sunday, Jan. 4 against Old Dominion.
