If you’re a hard-core fashion geek, or if you’re even remotely interested in the world of fashion, then you know that once September rolls around the fashion world is in a state of shock (in a good way of course).
Since September is when all of fashion’s most coveted designers are showcasing their Spring and Summer collections. Events are held all around the world, special publications are put out and fans across the world are tuning in to take note of the latest trends.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
Commonly known as “New York Fashion Week” (NYFW), this week is one of four of the biggest major fashion weeks held around the world; others include London, Paris and Milan.
This year it’s being held Sept. 6 through 13 at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, N.Y. There are four venues: Stage, Theatre, Studio and Box.
NYFW is also where reality TV hit, “Project Runway” hosts its grand finale, where the top three designers of the competition show their full collections to be judged so a winner can be decided. The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), The Art Institute of New York and Parson’s New School for Design also have students showing their collections in the venues.
Some of the stand out NYFW hits this year included Zac Posen, Thakoon, Alexander Wang, Diane Von Frustenberg, Charlotte Ronson, Rebecca Minkoff, Monique Lhuillier, DKNY and Carolina Herrera.
At NYFW you’ll find popular fashion and style bloggers roaming about taking notes and photos of their experiences at the shows, you’ll see editors from your favorite magazines dressed to the nines properly perched in their front row seats and you’ll find writers and interviewers from popular fashion platforms, such as “The Buro” or “The Cut,” interviewing models and designers backstage.
Fashion week is like a hurricane. Manic on the surface, but calm in the center.
Fashion’s Night Out
A worldwide endeavor sponsored by Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), Fashion’s Night Out started in 2009 as an effort for consumers to support the fashion industry despite the economic downfall our country was experiencing. This event marks the kick-off of NYFW.
As an effort to support full-priced retails, shops are open late and are available to the public for shopping, enjoying live music and socializing with the “elite” of the fashion world.
Fashion’s Night Out in NYC was held on Sept. 6. When the sun went down the Empire State Building had special lights shining at the top of it to recognize this prominent fashion event.
The September Issue
The September issue in most fashion publications are the biggest issues of the year. Primarily, “Vogue’s” issue is the most coveted, but other fashion magazines like “Elle,” “W” and “Harper’s Bazaar” don’t trail too far behind.
So why is the September issue so big? Why does it matter?
This issue showcases designer’s autumn and winter advertisements, a lot of them. It features the best of the best when it comes to fashion spreads, it educates us on new trends and it really places an emphasis on fashion photography. It inspires us and gives us ideas on how to change the way we dress. The strongest writing and the strongest editorials are presented to us.
After flipping through Vogue’s September issue, you always feel informed and up to date in fashion, and you’re exposed to new talent.
This year, Vogue has broken the record for their biggest September issue to date. 916 pages, featuring pop music’s most relevant superstar, Lady Gaga gracing the cover.
