UNC Charlotte student shot during drug exchange, suspects escape

Police found 4.5 lbs of marijuana and seven guns during the investigation

A UNC Charlotte student is stable, but in serious condition, after suffering a gunshot Thursday. The shooting occurred at a residence on Bonnie Lane, less than a mile from campus.

Police were called at 12:34 p.m. The victim and two suspects had arranged a drug transaction. During the meeting, the suspects robbed the student of cash and a handgun, then shot him. They fled the scene in a grey Nissan Altima.

While searching the home, police found 4.5 lbs of marijuana, three rifles, two shot guns and two handguns. One occupant, Blaise Bennett, was charged with two counts of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. 

The University sent out a “Niner Notice” e-mail, alerting students, faculty and staff of the shooting. Officials said there was no threat to campus.
