Charlotte was the host site of an opening weekend NCAA volleyball tournament held at the Dale F. Halton Arena. The Charlotte Invitational consisted of four games played over the course of Aug. 25 and 26.

49ers Volleyball faced off against South Carolina State and Southern Utah on the first day. Day two held matches against Belmont College and Elon University forthe Niners.

Charlotte Volleyball was able to take their first game of the season in a 3-0 sweep over SC State. The match was highlighted by 11 team blocks, a .274 hitting percentage, and a second set in which they were able to win 25-4.

Sophomore Jocelyn Stoner led the team in blocks with six total. Junior Jannelle Curtiss also played a big role in the team victory with eight kills and a block of her own.

The second match of day one saw the 49ers down 2-0 in sets to Southern Utah before making a three set comeback to win their second match of the season.

Freshman Sydney Rowan had an outstanding performance in her second game for the 49ers and was able to lead the comeback. Rowan showcased her talents by posting the team’s first double-double of the season with 20 kills and 14 digs.

Senior Janell Sparks also contributed in a big way. Sparks had 16 kills on the night to go along with two blocks.

49ers Volleyball played hard on day one of the Charlotte Invitational en route to a 2-0 start on their season.

Day two of the tournament did not have similar results as the previous day which led to the team picking up two losses in a row after starting 2-0.

Facing off against Belmont, the 49ers this time found themselves up 2-0 in sets before dropping three straight for their first loss of the year.

Strong performances by Outside Hitter Sydney Rowan and Libero Yumi Garcia were not enough to fight off the Bruins comeback in this match. Rowan led the team in kills for the second consecutive game with 21 while Garcia was dominant on defense with 29 digs.

The 49ers finished the tournament with a match against Elon University. This game was a back and forth battle until Elon was able to capture the match victory in the fifth and final set.

After splitting the first two sets with both team winning by a score of 25-17, Elon was able to win the third set by a score of 29-27.

Charlotte answered this with a dominant fourth set in which they were able to win 25-11. Elon closed out the match with a 15-11 fifth set victory to win the game.

49ers Volleyball led the match in blocks, aces, and hitting percentage while tying Elon in digs with 95. The strong team effort was not enough to take the victory which left the team with a 2-2 record to start the season.

Sydney Rowan and Yumi Garcia were awarded with All-Tournament team honors for the Charlotte Invitational for their strong efforts in kills and digs respectively.

After the first weekend of the season, 49ers Volleyball leads the nation in team blocks. Curtiss leads the nation in total blocks and Garcia in total digs.

Charlotte Volleyball’s next game will take place on August 29 when they travel to University of North Carolina Greensboro for a 7 PM match. The 49ers will look to build off of their strong start and pick up their third victory on the season.
