49ers Golf finishes fifth in Myrtle Beach

| March 12, 2015

After shooting a four-over round of 292 on Tuesday, the Charlotte 49ers men’s golf team finished fifth out of 15 teams in the 2015 Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday General Hackler Championship.

The 49ers were led by Riley Davenport who ended the tournament at one over par, landing him inside the top ten amongst all competitors. Davenport was consistent on the two days, as he shot one over on Monday and breaking even on Tuesday. Sophomore Seth Gandy was huge for the 49ers on Tuesday, finishing 13th overall by the end of the tournament; he followed up his sluggish Monday performance by improving three shots on Tuesday, which shot him up the leaderboard.

Thomas Rowland, like Gandy, was aided by a successful Tuesday afternoon. Thanks to shooting just one over par on his last round, he jumped eight positions on the leaderboard. Unlike the other golfers, Victor Wiggins’ Tuesday did not go as planned. His four over par round on Tuesday moved him back on the leaderboard.

Even with the lesser round, he was still able to finish tied for 21st. The 49ers ended the tournament with Raul Menard. After playing great golf last tournament, he wasn’t able to match the same success. A tough 14-16 hole stretch led him to finishing five over par for the day. Head coach Ryan Cabbage said that despite the errors, he is keeping his head up.

“We’re still making too many mistakes in order to win golf tournaments with the quality of field we faced this week. The good news is, the mistakes that we’re making are avoidable and things we can work on in order to get better.”

North Florida, who is ranked 25th, won the tournament, finishing ahead of second place N.C. State by 12 shots. They finished three under par as a team. The 49ers will return to the green for the annual Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Georgia. The 54-hole tournament will be held for two days, Saturday-Sunday, Mar. 21-22.
