The 40th annual American Music Awards (AMAs) was held at The Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Acclaimed American Idol host, Ryan Seacrest, took over the hosting duty for the show this year.
Here are some of the artists and performers who stood out from the crowd – for good reasons and for bad ones.
Winners and Losers:
“Call Me Maybe” singer Carly Rae Jepsen took home the AMA for New Artist of the Year.
One Direction were also nominated for this category. Fans must have been shocked and confused last night, as 1D wasn’t doing so hot.
Justin Bieber was the obvious star of the show, winning Artist of the Year, along with other awards.
Taylor Swift and Luke Bryan snagged Country Female/Male Artists, which was expected.
Almost every award given out could have easily been predicted, aside from One Direction not winning in any category they were nominated for.
The Best, The Worst, and In Between:
This year’s AMAs allowed for some great performances. But of course, there were performances that just made you want to turn your TV volume down.
Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber stood out as the best. Taylor Swift was flawless as always, singing “I Knew You Were Trouble” off her latest album, “Red.”
T. Swift’s outfit change, lighting affects and back-up dancers made for an entertaining performance.
Justin Bieber took the stage calmly at first, sitting down next to a guitar player for an acoustic version of “As Long As You Love Me.”
“Beliebers” fell in love with Justin all over again. He then sped things up later on by singing “Beauty and a Beat” with Nicki Minaj.
Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber proved once again that they are true performers, despite being some of the youngest in the industry.
Former AI winners, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, also hit the stage Sunday night. Carrie Underwood was beautiful, however she could have chosen a better song to perform.
Kelly’s performance consisted of a medley of her hits, and made fans nostalgic. It was as if she was in front of Simon, Paula and Randy once again.
On the contrary, there was a performance from Swizz Beatz, Chris Brown and Ludacris. I look forward to never watching that performance again.
The final performers included MC Hammer and PSY. If you think “Gangnam Style” is good entertainment, then you’ll think this was a perfect ending to the 2012 AMAs.
Overall, The 40th Anniversary American Music Awards was a successful night for those successful in the music industry. It was an entertaining celebration and a memorable Sunday night award show.
