Since school has started back with the Fall 2012 semester, a big change has rocked the university area bar scene.
The immensely popular college bar Bad Dogs American Pub has upped the age requirement for their notorious Dollar Wells nights from 18 to 21.
The bar, a favorite among UNC Charlotte students of all ages, can be found at the Shoppes at University Place across from Boardwalk Billy’s.
Any given Tuesday or Thursday night, a line can be seen forming as early as 10:30 p.m. of people eager to spend their singles on dollar vodka pineapples and rum and cokes. Those who frequent the bar know that a Dollar Wells night at Bad Dogs means being packed shoulder to shoulder and 20 minute bathroom lines. We accept this for the incredibly low price you have to pay for a great time.
This change, upsetting to many under-agers, was implemented Aug. 14. I asked Bad Dogs general manager Darin Barnas what prompted this change and he explained that, “The motivation behind the change in age requirement stems from the fact that Tuesdays and Thursdays are our busiest nights.”
“We changed the requirement on these nights in order to maintain the college bar atmosphere. If we are going to pack out the bar, we decided we should pack it out with people who can actually legally purchase alcohol, and not people who can’t spend any money in there,” he said.
“Also with 300 plus people in there, if everyone is over 21, my staff won’t have to concern themselves with who is and isn’t wearing wrist bands. They can instead focus on maintaining order and keeping everyone happy.”
So how does everyone feel about this change? I think I speak for most when I say I couldn’t be happier. Now there are far fewer unwanted elbows nudging me and more space for me to get my Wobble on.
I am sure that many of those who are no longer old enough to attend Dollar Wells nights feel jilted. For them the party is over, at least until they turn the long awaited age of 21. Shouldn’t it be?
Bars are, after all, a place one goes to drink. Every college student is painfully aware that you have to be 21 to consume alcohol, just ask the expensive lawyers that took care of our drinking tickets.
Monica Glick, a senior Communications major confessed, “I think it’s a great idea. Hopefully it will be less crowded. I won’t have to deal with underage people trying to drink in the bathrooms, holding up the line or bugging me to buy drinks for them.”
Those no longer able to enjoy the Dollar Wells festivities may be feeling a little lost now on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Never fear kiddos, there are several 18 and up clubs here in Charlotte that will gladly admit you past the velvet rope.
Someday you will be old enough to return to all of the wonders that are Tuesdays and Thursdays at Bad Dogs and your time spent waiting will surely give you a greater appreciation for the whole experience.
