Million Dollar Quartet visits Uptown Charlotte

| November 18, 2011

Million Dollar Quartet,  the smash hit Broadway musical, is inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins  together for the first and only time. The musical is opening in Uptown Charlotte at the Knight Theater on Nov. 22. The musical stars an eight person cast and many beloved songs.

Million Dollar Quartet brings to life a moment of musical history. In the span of the show 24 favorite songs are brought back for audiences to enjoy, songs like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Matchbox,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Hound Dog”. Drama does ensue between Elvis and Carl Perkins over the song “Blue Suede Shoes” (a song written by Perkins but made famous by Elvis) however the tension is relieved with strong comedy and powerhouse hits.

During the show the eight person cast transforms into an eight person band, playing live for the audience. There is a single female character in the musical, Dyanne who is Evlis’s musically talented girlfriend. Dyanne is played by Kelly Lamont. Lamont, an Illinois native, was a member of the Million Dollar Quartet Chicago cast for the past three years. She is excited to extend her role as Dyanne with the show’s first national tour.

The tour is a new experience for Lamont. “In Chicago the audience sat only 400 people but now on the road we are performing for packed houses with 2,500 to 2,800 people,” said Lamont who wanted the experience of traveling with the national tour. “It is really fun to be working with a small cast, we [essentially] are working as one band. The show is kind of live being at a rock concert,” said Lamont.

Performing as the only female in a cast with seven other guys can be daunting to some but not for Lamont. “I had an older brother growing up…[and] now I have seven other brothers,” said Lamont who is enjoying her time with her cast mates.

Million Dollar Quartet, sponsored by the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, is opening this week and running until Dec. 11. Tickets can be purchased online on the Blumenthal website.
